"Ron Grainer A Collectors Guide"

December 2015

Deleted the listing for the 1963 TV series "The Desperate Ones" as it appears Grainer did not write the theme music even if he played calliope on the recording session and may have been responsible for the arrangement - one Roger Roger did. Online info about the track is scarce but a scan of the disc label on 45cat.com resolved the composer question.

APRIL 2014

* Updated 1963 Dr Who theme write up with details of Grainers reply to Gerald Lovell 1980 letter.

*Added "Fanny Craddock Invites [1970] " and "Sunday Break [1958]"  to rare TV series themes,

*deleted "Romance" series episodes "A House Full Of Men" and "The Black Knight" from Rare TV plays.

*deleted "Wild Daffodil" and added 'From harpsichord to horticulture - Heave Ho" - to musical "Those Who Can, Write Melodies"

*rewrote an awkwardly worded paragraph in Departure as "One of those tunes would be the theme for the long running BBC Science Fiction TV series Dr Who. A reoccurring plot device for this program is that when a doctor "dies" there is a dramatic visual effect. Modern versions of this sequence from the death of the ninth doctor, Christopher Eccleston, onwards have eerie similarities to the events of Charlie Grainer's death in 1903".

MARCH 2014

Revised review of "Station Six Sahara" [1962] noted the movie was nominated for a 1964 Bafta award for best black and white cinematography http://awards.bafta.org/award/1964/film Added link to full Martin Scorsese "Guilty Pleasures" list  http://www.douban.com/group/topic/9733463/

JANUARY 2014

*29.1.14  Deleted reference to "All Gas And Gaiters" pilot episode. Despite information given elsewhere the video closing credits reveal Grainer did not contribute to either the incidental music in the "Bishop Rides Out" demo [Dennis Wilson] or the later Swingle Singers influenced "All Gas and Gaiters" series theme [Stanley Myers].

Grainer did write the theme for the Comedy Playhouse series in which the first "All Gas And Gaiters" play was  featured.

* 10.1.14 Corrected a drop out word and line in Part One "Moz[art]" I wish readers would tell me when this happens as its usually a whim of the blog program and when initially uploaded it was all there.

*10.1.14  Added an  epilogue to "The European Years" section 74 - 81 about the 1994 compilation CD

*8.1.14  A generous You Tube poster sent me a link to a video advertising the first Panorama program in colour. It featured the Rachmaninoff's first symphony Fourth movement instrumental as theme so that helps narrow the time frame down for the broadcast of Grainer's 1963 Panorama theme. Now if I could only get access to a private video recording of a Panorama program from 1964 or 1965.

*Received the "Festivals and Suns" LP in good nick. Unfortunately the three tracks currently available for listening online are by far the best. The rest is mediocre filler - an expensive disappointment  but at least I now know why I couldn't understand some of the lyrics to "Light, Love and Power" - they're in Latin!

* Found  a 28.3.1962 front page Daily Mirror article about a British parliamentary inquiry "into violence on the screen" caused by the too graphic onscreen death of Nancy in the "Oliver Twist" series. Added reference to it in the 1962 reviews.

DECEMBER 2013

* 20.12.13 Added information about the controversy caused by the second last  episode of the 1962 "Oliver Twist" series.

*20.12.13. Uploaded proof read version of 1981 review page now that several weeks have passed and the brain seems to have recovered from the numbing effect of watching 40+ dysfunctional family episodes of "Tales of the Unexpected".

*Found a copy of the LP "Festivals and Suns"by Spheres on Ebay - hope it arrives in a playable condition.

*Corrected a mistake made about the "Detective" anthology series.

Discovered that although Grainer did write the signature tune he only started with the revived second collection of plays which commenced broadcast 9.1.1968.  According to press reports John Addison wrote the theme for the first series aired in 1964.

Found a video copy of an episode of the second series which confirmed Grainer's involvement in the opening credits.

* Added to the 1981 reviews something noticed about the closing credits film clips of the two last Grainer TV themes "Sunday/Saturday Night Thriller" and "It Takes A Worried Man"

"One intriguing aspect of the end credits film for "Worried Man" is the way it counterpoints the general sequence of events used in the "Sunday / Saturday Night Thriller" series end credits movie both clips seemingly illustrating two different types of body disintegration at death.

In "Thriller" the film starts with a separated close up of a pair of calm glazed eyes which proceeds to be overlaid with images of various bodies floating away in various directions ending with an empty shell smashing on a floor.

In "Worried" the credits movie commerces with the front image of an intact but startled personality from which various physical bits break off and fall to the floor until the last piece to go is the section containing his eyes."

NOVEMBER 2013

*Added "The Dales" theme  to "The European Years" 1962

*Added new detail about Verity Lambart to 1963 "Dr Who" theme write up

OCTOBER 2013

*Uploaded new draft version of the juke box musical "Those Who Can, Write Melodies"

*Added "All The Kings Men" to the Instrumentals section as it appears to be a one off composition not connected with "Robert and Elizabeth"

*Uploaded reviews of 1976, 1977, 1978 compositions to "The European Years" 1974- 1981

SEPTEMBER 2013

*Uploaded reviews of 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975 compositions to "The European Years" then discovered the 20 pages maximum for each blog was actually 15 [maybe there is a page size factor that comes into play] so started a European Years Part Two blog with links to the new section.

AUGUST 2013

*After much temporary chaos a new template was applied to "The European Years" that allows me to add new pages without reloading the old ones to keep it in chronological order.

*Rewrote sections  of "The Australian Years". Part One

JULY 2013
